| Research Abstract |
This essay considers the relationship between Japan and Korea during the 1907-1910 period as one part of an ongoing study of the history of Japan's annexation of Korea.
After the Russo-Japanese War, Korea became the protectorate of Japan. In 1907 Japan developed an aggressive policy aimed at taking over Korean domestic political power and annexing the peninsula to Japan, but the following circumstances hindered the realization of this annexation plan 1) the worsening of the anit-Japanese fighting by the Korean citizenry, 2) the international con-straints carried out by the great world powers, and 3) Japan's economic difficulties. In response to these issues, the army-clique centered Japanese government exerted strong pressure on Korea, at the same time that in August 1910 it concluded the "Treaty Regarding the Annexation of Korea to the Empire of Japan aimed at cooperating with the great powers of the world. With this treaty, Japan abolished the Korean nation of "Kankoku" and established in it place "Chosen, " the Korean colony of Japan.
This article traces the evidence related to this process from various angles, including foreign diplomacy, economic policy, and political measures.
