Research Abstract

Japan as a well cultivated region is located in the monsoon aria. So annual precipitation amount is higher than other cultivated region belonging to arid or semiarid climate. Wet injury is one of the important problems to over come in cultivation of soybean or barley. The problem is more severe when these crops are grown in the filed after the rice cultivation where drainage is poor.
To clarify the mechanism of wet injury of these crops, we study on the effect of submerging of root system on photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and chlorophyll contents of these leaves.
The results are as follows ;
1) Photosynthetic rate of soybean leaves is decreased by submergence of root. Rate is decreased significantly on 5th days after treatment and become 60% of leaves without treatment on 10th day.
2) Photosynthetic rate of barley leaves is also decreased by submerging treatment. Rate is decreased significantly on 2nd day, and photosynthetic activity almost ceased on 5th day.
3) Transpiration rate and chlorophyll contents of barley leaves are decreased by submerging in succession to decline of photosynthetic rate.
4) Effects of submergence root system is enhanced under high CO2 concentration in barley leaves.
5) These experimental results suggest that ageing of leave is accelerated by treatment.
