Research Abstract

Patients with steroid-resistant nephroric syndrome due to primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) have a grave prognosis. The purpose of this study was to examine the pathological role of phenotypically changed mesangial cells in the process of glomerulosclerosis in primary FSGS.The results of this study indicate that 1) mesangial cells undergo phenotypic changes to myofibroblasts, 2) phenotypically changed mesangial cells to myofibroblast participate in the active scarring by de novo synthesis of interstitial collagens, and 3) growth factors originating from infiltrating macrophages may be responsible for the mesangial phenotypic changes. The interaction between mesangial cells and infiltrating macrophages is now under investigation in view of glomerular expression of macrophage-colony stimulating factor.
