Research Abstract |
Gene expression of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) was examined by competitive reversed polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay in rat fetal organs with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Both fetuses and placentas from the uterine horns with ligation to the uterine artery were significantly smaller than those of the contralateral horns of the uteri. Messenger RNA (m RNA) abundance of eNOS in the placenta with IUGR was significantly less than that of the control. Messenger RNA abundance in the fetal brain and liver was below detection limit of our assay. Unlike preproendothelin-1 m RNA,eNOS m RNA level in the kidney with IUGR showed no significant change with hypoxia.
