Research Abstract

To construct a complete denture by CAD/CAM,we developed and evaluated a system to virtually arrange artificial teech on a monitor screen of a personal computer.
Upper and lower edentulous plaster models and occlusion rims in which the ridgerelationship was recoded, and four-fold plaster models of teeth (C4-304, Nissin) were measured at intervals of 0.25 mm by a non-contact type shape measurement system (Surflacer VMS-250R,UNISN). The occlusion rims and edentulous plaster models were fixed on a fixation device for rotational measurement, and measured at right angles to the tentative plane of occlusion. The tooth plaster models were measured in the long axial and mesiondistal directions. The outlines of the tooth plaster models were generated from these data and reduced to 1/4 size.
The edentulous ridges as surface models, the anterior margin of the upper occlusion rim at the level of the occlusal plane as a refernce line and the artificial teeth for virtual arrangment were displayd. Moreover, the buccolingual reference lines on the occlusal plane for the lower tooth arrangement were calculated based on the inclination of the upper and lower residual ridges to the occlusal plane in a frontal section and were displayd. Using these reference lines, artificial teeth were arranged virtually by parallel movement, and horizontal, anteroposterior and mesiodistal rotation. A program was written using Visual Basic 4.0 (Microsoft) on a personal computer (PC-9821 St20, NEC) with a 17 inch moniter screen (Diamondtron RD17GII,Mitsubishi).
Though the software should be further improved, we could arrange surface-like gray level images of artificial teeth cirtually using the edentulous plaster models and the reference lines.
