| Research Abstract |
In order to study to mastication-related and aging-associated genomic changes in brain, we investigated the effect of impaired mastication on expression of acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF), brain-devided nerve factor (BDNF) and c-fos? an immediate-early gene, in brain of a senescence-accelerated mouse (SAM), an animal model of human senile dementia. When different mastications gave to SAM,no apparent effect on expression of aFGF and BDNF was observed throughout the brain. However, impaired mastication induced a decrease in hippocampal c-fos expression. , the greatest effect being found in the CA1 subfield, followed by the CA3 subfield, then the dentate gyrus. Furthermore, in SAM with impaired mastication, the learning ability in the Morris water maze was significantly decreased compared with that in the intact SAM.These results suggest that impaired mastication may cause the age-related reduction in hippocampal activity, linked to impairment of memory.
