Research Abstract

We conducted the following studies in the fiscal year 1997 : (1) Iwata did a study on dialect border of Central part of China during August-September. (2) Saitou and Ueda visited Beijing and Xian in September, and collected blood samples in the surburb of Xian. Three Chinese collaborators (Jin, Yuan, and Zhan) as well as two other researchers (Wan, Kitano, and Iwamoto) also joined that study. (3) Saitou and Yuasa visited Beijing and Chansha in November, and collected blood samples in the surburb of Chansha. (4) Horai and Tokunaga visited Beijing and Kunmin in November, and collected blood samples in the surburb of Kunmin. (5) Three Chinese collaborators visited Japan and did a collaborative studies with Japanese members at University of Tokyo and National Institute of Genetics.
In the fiscal year 1998, we conducted the following studies : (1) Saitou, Ueda, and researcher Wan visited Beijing, Anyan, and Xinan, and conducted a preliminary study to extact ancient DNA from human remains. Jin Feng also attended this study. (2) Two Chinese collaborators (Jin and Cao) visited Japan in October, and studied genetic polymorphism of red blood cell enzymes on samples stored at International Center for Japanese Studies. (3) Saitou, Omoto, Horai, Tokunaga, Yuasa, and researcher Noda visited China in January 1999, and collected blood samples near Guanzhou, Fuzhou, and Hanzhou. Jin and Cao also were involved in that study. (4) Ueda visited Beijing on the ancient DNA study.
