Research Abstract |
In the total of 148 days from 1997 to 1999, twelve Japanese and five Vietnamese scientists participated in this project and surveyed the fauna of insects, spiders and the other terrestrial invertebrates in some localities in northern Vietnam, including Mt. Tam Dao, Mt. Pia Oak, Ba Be, Ha Giang, Sa Pa, Son La, Cuc Phuong and Que Phong. As the result of this research project, fifteen scientific papers have been published up to now in the following group : Insecta, Lepidoptera (6), Coleopera (4), Diptera (2), Odonata (1), Hymenoptera(1) ; Arachnida, Araneae (1). The faunistic similarity between Vietnam and Japan was suggested on some groups, for example, Heptathela (Araneae) and Triomicrus (Coleoptera). A phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial DNA sequences was made on the carabid beetle subgenus Apotomopterus distributed from Indochina to Japan ; as the result, a new phylogenetic system was proposed and the diversification of this group was discussed. The Vietnamese and the Japanese scientists worked together cooperatively in this project. A forum on taxonomic works of entomology was made by Dr. Owada with the staffs and students of entomology in the Hanoi Agricultural University. He also discussed with the rangers of the Cuc Phuong National Park on the study and conservation of nature in this area. In 12-22th Jun. 1999, the Vietnamese investigator, Prof. Ha Quang Hung visited Japan for discussing on the results of this project and further cooperative studies in future.
