| Research Abstract |
Succeeding the former Franco-Japanese joint research project entitled "Franco-Japanese Joint Research on China, Taiwan and Hong Kong" (Head investigator : Dr. NAKAJIMA, Mineo, President, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies/Term of project : 1995-1996/ Project number : 07044032), this research project newly added specialists on Korean Peninsular (Prof. IZUMI Hajime) and European-Asian relations (Prof. WATANABE, Hirotaka) to the members in order to expand and deepen the purpose of the study.
In the field of China studies and Asian studies in Japan, there are few cases of joint research with academic circles in France, which has a long history of Sinology In contrary to policy-oriented China studies in U.S.A., French Sinology relies mainly on the sociological and historical approach. The intellectual exchange with French Sinologists offered implications to China studies and Asian studies in Japan.
The Franco-Japanese Joint Conference was held every year in Paris by using the fund of this research project. The Japanese members visited Paris to give a report on their specialties every conference, and there were active discussions between Japanese members and French members. The reports of Japanese members broadly covered the field of Chinese politics, Chinese economy, Chinese diplomacy, and education in China, China-Taiwan relations, Hong Kong affairs, Korean Peninsular affairs and Euro-Asian relations. Our joint research project has produced a great deal of fruitful results in terms of academic exchanges between France and Japan. Besides some French members came to Japan and gave presentation in 1997 and 1998.
