Research Abstract |
The first Workshop on "Environmental Monitoring from Space" supported by KOSEF and JSPS was held at KAIST during 15-18th November, 1991. As the result of workshop the EMSEA (Environmental Monitoring from Space of East Asia) project was formed under the agreements of both parties for the promotion of a well organized research activities in remote sensing fields by scientific communities of Korea and Japan. Since then, regular meetings "Environmental Monitoring from Space of East Asia" have been held every autumn and becomes larger and larger. Presentations are covering wide area of earth environment such as oceanography, meteorology, hydrology, land use, forestry, vegetation, water quality monitoring, and related data processing and database. The number were as follows ; Japan : 19, Korea : 29 in '97, Japan : 18, Korea : 49 in '98, and Japan : 22, Korea : 68 in '99. This project has made a big impact to the Korean side. Prof.Choi developed the Project EMSEA and has established a new remote sensing center at KAIST recently and the number of Korean scientists in this field has been increased very rapidly. Through this project, cooperative research programs have been jointly proposed to the JSPS and KOSEF in the fields of land use, aerosol, oceanography and vegetation. "Contributions to the Project EMSEA", which is collection of 34 papers from both sides with records, was published to summarize its activities towards 21st century.
