Research Abstract

本計画(国際深海掘削計画、ODP)は掘策研究船ジョイデス・レゾリューションを用いて、深海低の掘削を行い、海底堆積物と岩石の柱状試料(コア)を連続的に採取し、また検層装置(ロッギング)などによって地殻の諸性質を直接測定することにより、地球内部および地球環境ダイナミックスの2大テーマの解明を目指す国際共同研究である。日本からは、掘削船の各航海に研究者を乗船・参加させて船上での共同研究を推進し、また研究船白鳳丸を用いて掘削候補地点の事前海底探査を行う。本年度は、平成10年1月16日-3月16日(東京-ケアンズ-ポンペイ-東京)の白鳳丸研究航海においてオントンジャワ海台・北ソロモン海溝・マリアナ島弧の掘削事前調査航海を行なった。総計1500kmの反射地震波探査、29台の海底地震計と50台のソノブイ(日、米、ノルウェー共同)による屈折波探査、3台の海底電位差計による電気伝導度探査、イザナギサイドスキャンソナーによる海底地質探査、重力・地磁気・音響測深による海底地形構造探査を行ない、オントンジャワ海台の成因とプレート収束境界での衝突現象を研究した。その結果、オントンジャワ海台の基盤と周辺海洋地殻の境界には顕著な構造の乱れが見られないこと、基盤構造が一様であること、衝突帯では基盤の上部7kmほどがはぎ取られて付加体となっていることがわかった。これに基づき5サイトの掘削提案を行なった。
ODPの活動に関しては、理事会、科学委員会、各パネル・各委員へ出席し、日本の成果の発表と計画への意思反映を行なった。
