| Research Abstract |
Aiming at studying ASEAN'S ability to formulate broader regional order, we started this joint research in 1997. In that particular year, financial crisis broke out in Thailand, and then it widened in neighboring countries, which deteriorated the image of ASEAN. Nonetheless, we kept analyzing ASEAN so as to verify the hypothesis that ASEAN is capable enough to survive and cope with such difficulties. It turned out we were right. Specifically, Yamamoto studied regionalism and security regime ; Kuroyanagi reconsidered the image of ASEAN ; Shiraishi investigated impacts of the crisis upon Indonesia and its implications to regional cooperation ; and Ogasawara studies the meaning of the widening of ASEAN so as to include Indochina. In general, ASEAN was not facilitated to cope with financial crisis, but it introduced a surveillance mechanism of macro economic performance, and committed itself to further integration toward the year 2020. True that ASEAN did not exercise its power to formulate broader order in the Asia Pacific region during the years of crisis, but it showed its adaptational power. ASEAN'S power potential is still high.
