Research Abstract

This is a four-year continuous study whose purpose is to ascertain nursing care characteristics of geriatric hospitals in Japan, and create a nursing care administration model based upon these findings. On this fourth year, a focus group interview was held with the nursing administrators who we interviewed. It was followed by the conclusion of research findings.
As geriatric hospitals providing long-term care, we focused and studied hospitals with beds for long-term medical care, specially-approved hospitals (hospitals focusing on care for the elderly) and mental hospitals. The quality of care received at geriatric hospitals have been improving since the introduction of hospitals focusing on care for the elderly, a large number of beds for long-term medical care and care insurance.
Furthermore, the concept of team treatment has been actively practiced mainly in the area of "care". It has become apparent that this reform had been led by nursing care administrators. Therefore, we focused on these reform process when studying nursing care administration models for geriatric hospitals.
Elements of such administrative models were found to fall into the following five categories :
Philosophy (management, medicine, nursing, care) Needs (social needs, needs by community, patients and family) Strategy Human relations/Caring Energy
We examined the characteristics of each element, analyzed relationships among elements and presented the "Rotational/Developmental Model" form of nursing care administration.
