Research Abstract |
This study group was organized aiming to reconstruct the images of the Third World and to renovate its regional geography. All the members of the group has been conducting their own field research for many years in the various parts of the Third World, In these two years we have enthusiastically discussed on the following issues ; 1) What is regional geography? And what sort of role has regional geography been playing in the national education in Japan as well as in the academic geography? 2) What has been the problems in the images of Third World and how they should be altered? 3) What is the proper methodology and epistemology for renovating regional geography of the Third World? 4) What sort of actual alternative regional geography could be provided to reconstruct the images of the Third World and to be made the best use in the geographical education? We tackled with these issues and gave a lot of our original and insightful ideas to them published in the book of our final result.. We also organized the symposium under the same title as our research at the annual meeting of the Association of Japanese Geographers held at Senshu Univ. on 26-27 March, 1999. The member of our study group presented our own papers and openly addressed these questions to the geographical circles in Japan. A number of scholars and school teachers also joined in the discussion, which made a great success. We believe that the issues we properly raised and located should be continued to be discussed in our circles. We are also approaching further research on the relationship between fieldwork, area study and describing regional geography ; and the cooperation between physical and human geographers in renovating regional geography of the Third World.
