Research Abstract

A method for utilization of plastic waste in a geotechnical point of view, it is considered that trafficability and stability of soft ground are improved by mixing plastic waste pieces into surface of the ground. The purpose of this study is to evaluate improvement effect of the ground with plastic waste pieces and to make use it in a practice. The main conclusions obtained from this study are as follows,
(1) The nondestructive testing apparatus for measuring the deformation modulus of the cement-treated soils with plastic pieces was developed and the influence of confinging pressure on the deformation modulus was clarified.
(2) The undrained strength of the cement-treated soils increases as the content of plastic pieces increases.
(3) The improvement effect in bending strength was investigated based on the bending test results.
(4) From the model loading test results of surface stabilized ground, it is found that the bearing capacity of the improved ground increases in increase with the content of plastic pieces.
(5) The improvement effect by plastic pieces can be evaluated by FEM analysis in consideration of brittle failure.
(6) It is confirmed that the plastic waste is useful for improving the mechanical properties of the cement-treated soils.
