Research Abstract |
An assistive system for a GUI-based PC was designed for blind computer user. Both tactile and auditory devices were applied for user interface. Two tactile devices were designed for the tactile control and presentation. One is a tactile mouse mounted an 8 x 8 tactor-pin array that captures a visual display terminal. Blind user controls any application software by the tactile mouse. The other is a tactile graphic display. This display was consisted of a 40 x 30 tactor pins with 3-mm interspacing. Blind users perceive graphic image such as the icons, simple images and graphs. In addition a speech synthesizer introduced for auditoryuse. Blind users recognize any text information by this device. Utility software considered for the Windows 98 that is the most popular in Japan. Most application software such as the word processor, the spreadsheet, and the picture drawing were worked on the developed system.
