Research Abstract |
1. Analysis of the propagation phenomenon of ultrasonic wave in cancellous bone. The cancellous bone is comprised of a complex porous network of numerous solid trabecular elements. Trabecular elements are almost aligned in the direction of stress. We have discovered a peculiar phenomenon of ultrasonic waves, i.e. two longitudinal waves (a fast wave and a slow wave) exist in cancellous bone. This peculiar phenomenon have been analyezed in detail in this research project. Results of analytical and experimeutal studies in the research project show a strong possibility for the estimation of cancellous bone density and of microscopic trabecular structure based on the frequency characteristics of the propagation speed and attenuation for both fast and slow waves. The results mean that atrophy or morbid changes of cancellous bone can be evaluated. 2. Establishment of a new bone strength evaluation by ultrasonic method A new method to measure the ultrasonic transfer function of cancellous bone is

developed by taking into account the fast and slow waves. The density and elastic constant of cancellous bone have been non-invasively determined by the measured transfer functions and the measured propagation speeds. A further investigation is necessary to obtain numerical index of bone strength based on the elastic constant. 3. Development of wide-band high resolution ultrasonic transducer for medical applications. The key device to realize a bone strength diagnosis system is the wide-band high resolution ultrasonic transducer. We have established during the project a theoretical basis on the impulse response and on the radiated acoustic field in the time domain, which are indispensable to develop and design the transducers and also established a calibration method and a fabrication method of transducers. 4. Future perspective of the researches. The next stage of the researches is to establish a bone strength index based on the ultrasonic or elastic properties of bone and on the statistical analysis on huge clinical data and is also to be studied the acoustical imaging of bone density and bone strength. The next stage has already started by the support of the Grant-in-Aid for University and Society Collaboration of the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture. Less
