| Research Abstract |
This project is an attempt to reach the minds of Greek historians through investigating their use of key words in historical thoughts.
We can select may key words ― tyche ( chance, fortune ), ananke ( necessity ), aitia ( cause ), prophasis( cause, reason ),. moira ( lot, destiny ) etc. ― by which Greek historians explain to themselves and to their readers the rise and fall of a society. Comparing the significance which they gave to these words in their books, we can understand which factors they attribute to a more prominent position in 'history'.
For Thucydides 'ananke' is crucial and paradigmatic in human affirs. On the other hand, Polybius lays stress on 'tyche' which reflects his intellectual framework concerned with 'history' Generally speaking, Greek histrorians have no notion of the religious or transcendental necessity caused by the will of god.
Continuing such investigations, we may gain a relatively clear understanding about the evolution of Greek historical thoughts.
