Research Abstract |
We investigate crack extension behaviors for a linear elastic body with a parallel interacting crack at the neighborhood of the main crack tip. We discussed the crack extension based on maximum energy release rate criterion. We compute the energy release rate at the onset of crack kinking, of all the crack tips, using the E-integral which is path independent even for a path containing stationary crack tips. For such cases, tile well-known J-integral is not path independent. As a result, assuming the isotropy of fracture toughness of the body and judging from the criterion based on the energy release rate, we found that there existed the relative positions of the interacting crack which promoted or interrupted the straight extension of the main crack and which made the main crack jump to an extension of an interacting crack. And we found the position of interacting crack that most interrupted the extension of a main crack, and found the value of the energy release rate that tensile fracture strength of the body became largest.
