Research Abstract |
The behavior of two-dimensional fluidized beds under various gravity-levels were observed using our speed-controllable drop tower(0-1g) and our high-gravity generator(1-10g). The effect of gravity-level on minimum fluidization velocity of a gas-solid and a liquid-solid fluidized bed was investigated. Both the fluidized beds were made of an acrylic resin. In each bed, several kinds of solid particles (ex. glass beads, zirconia balls, alumina balls) were used as the bed materials, and fluidized by nitrbgen gas or water. Each bed had two pressure taps. The pressure drop between the taps was measured by a differential-pressure sensor. The behavior of each bed was observed using a CCD camera, and recorded by a video recorder. Low and high gravity-levels were realized by our speed-controllable drop tower and our high-gravity generator, respectively. The flow patterns under various gravity-levels were classified by the observation of the video tapes. Minimum fluidization velocity were determined by measurement of the static pressure and observation of the flow patterns. For the observation of the fluidized bed under low and normal gravity-levels(0.3-1g), both zirconia balls and glass beads were in group-B of the Geldart map. Bubbles occurred at slightly above minimum fluidization velocity. Under high gravity-levels(3-10g), the separticles, which were categorized in group-D, were readily spouted. The experimental data of minimum fluidization velocity versus gravity-level was in good agreement with Wen-Yu's equation which has been proposed for the data under normal gravity-level.
