Research Abstract

Some morphological and physiological characteristics of Dendranthema species native to Japan were investigated. Each species showed a special plant form due to unique branching and flowering habits. A11 species flowered under daylengths of 10 and 12 hr at 25C. The species can be divided into three groups based on minimum temperature requirement for flowering in winter. The sequence of capitulum initiation and floret development events in Dendranthema species was similar. Two types of disc floret development, i.e. petal closed before or after stamen primordia initiation, were observed. The reciprocal crosses between chrysanthemum and Dendranthema species are possible when the appropriate genotype is carefully chosen. The progenies of summer-autumn flower type chrysanthemum flowered earlier than those of autumn flower type in all combinations. We confirmed the distribution of D.yoshinaganthmum were same as reported in 1950s. Considerable morphological and physiological variations among 36 lines of this species were observed. Variations in cpDNA of this species were detected in PCR-RELP analysis.
