Research Abstract

Our previous study have shown that chronic sleep deprivation caused deficiency of intracellular magnesium (Mg) concentration, and it may contribute to coronary artery spasm. The present study is designed to clarify the relationship between nitric oxide (NO), as endothelial relaxation factor and intracellular Mg concentration. The subjects were 10 healthy volunteers. The study conditions were designed as follows (A) sleep deprivation state with duration of sleep less than 60% of control state for 1 month, (B) a day following a night good of sleep of as the control state. Intracellular Mg and NO were measured in each state.
The results were as follows : (1) Plasma NO level was higher in 7 out of 10 subjects during sleep deprivation state than those in control. On the other hand, the remaining plasma NO level was lower. (2) Serum Mg level was similar in both states (1.9 * 0.1 at control state vs 2.0 * 0.1 mg/dl at sleep deprivation). The mean intracellular Mg concentration was less in the state of chronic sleep deprivation (2.7 * 0.7 vs 2.0 * 0.4 mg/dl). (3) There was significantly inverse correlation between plasma NO and intracellular Mg concentration (r=-0.49, p(]SY.di-substituted right.[)O.O5), but no correlation between serum Mg and plasma NO.
Our findings suggest that NO level may be responsive to changes in intracellular Mg and increase of plasma NO level may compensate the defficiency of intracellular Mg which can cause arterial spasm.
