Research Abstract

Different kinds of tendons were used to simulate a tendon graft or pulley reconstruction, and excursion resistance between tendon and pulley were evaluated.
Intrasynovial tendons, (i.e., flexor digitorum superficialis and the portion of the extensor indicis proprius beneath the extensor retinaculum) produced less excursion resistance than extrasynovial tendons, (i.e., the portion of the extensor digitolum communis distal to the extensor retinaculum and palmaris longus). The excursion resistance of the intrasynovial portion of the extensor digitolum communis tendon was significantly higher than that of the extrasynovial portion of the same tendon.
The gliding resistances of tendons were significantly decreased after administration of HA, especially in the extrasynovial tendons. Excursion resistances of the extrasynovial tendons after administration of HA were not significantly different from the control values. The results of this study suggest that the administration of HA may possibly to improve the clinical outcome of the flexor tendon graft.
