Research Abstract |
The aim of the project was to conduct the basic experiment for application of cochlear implants to innate deaf children who do not have hearing experience. using mutant deaf mice. In 1997, histological examine and hearing ability on mutant mice and the new design of cochlear electrodes were conducted. Bus homo mice had histological disarrangement in Colti. organ, which became severe with development. Disorder of cilia of hair cells was confirmed by scanning electron microscope. Hearing ability was tested by ABR.Bus hetero and normal mice showed ABR in day 9 to 11, which became 5 distinct peaks with age, while Bus homo mice had not shown ABR completely even with 100 dB HL strong stimulus. This indicates Bus homo mice are deaf during all of their lives, and are good model. New design electrodes were good for effective stimulation for cochlear implants. In 1998, MLR and SVR as well as ABR were examined to test auditory center of brain to electrical cochlear stimulation. ABR to electrical stimulation showed also 5 peak response like one to acoustic stimulation. But the latencies of peaks to electrical stimulation was shorter than ones to. acoustic stimulation. MLR was also recorded as one to acoustic stimulation. Gene maping experiments showed that Bus gene is homologous with Waltzer gene which is also deaf mutant.
