Research Abstract

The findings of lenses with and without cataract were detected in patients with atopic dermatitis by a newly developed examination applying Scheimpflug and specular images of the lens. The cataractous changes were fundamentally the same as those pointed out by Vogt in the 1930s. These changes were shallow anterior cortical and / or subcapsular opacification. By applying the above examinations, another cases with occult cataract were detected. The methodology proposed by the authors would be clinically useful for early cataract diagnosis. Although serum IgE level has often been considered as an indicator of the patients' state, there was no significant relationship between cataract appearance and IgE levels in serum and aqueous humor. The habit of rubbing the eyelid due to strong itching and long-term steroid administration were not the original causes for the cataract, but they may have accelerated cataract progression. The cataract associated with atopic dermatitis is specific and different from traumatic and/or steroid induced cataracts.
Cataract formation mechanism has been considercd by multi-factorial risks, which act as co -and / or syn-cataract genic. Among the several risk factors, solar UV-B irradiation to the eyes is presently accepted as an important risk for cataract appearance and progression. In the experimental studies, cataract formation was detected from NC/Nga mice with mite infections which are used as a model animal for atopic dermatitis. However, according to long-term observation of NC/Nga mice and NC/Num mice which are the same strain as NC/Nga, their cataracts were not acquired, but congenital. Even so, NC/Num mice with mite infections may be useful animals to investigae the progression and prevention of cataracts which have been accelerated by UV exposure.
