| Research Abstract |
This study was carried out to elucidate relationship between autofluorescence emitted from oral cancer and porphyrin compounds. Established cell lines (HSC2,3,4), dimethyl benz [a] anthracen-induced tongue cancer in hamster and clinical samples obtained from patients with oral cancer were biochemically analyzed. Fluorescences emitted from the conditioned medium of cancer cells cultured with 5-aminolevulinic acid were similar to fluorescence spectra of protoporphyrin IX, coproporphyrin and Zn-protoporphyrin IX. Ethyl acetate extracts of nude-mouse tumors formed by HSC2 and HSC3 and of tongue cancer in hamster contained fluorescent compounds like protoporphyrin IX. High performance liquid chromatography of clinical samples revealed that the fluorescent materials were classified into protoporphyrin, coproporphyrin and other types. These results suggested that autofluorescence emitted from oral cancer was associated with porphyrin and cancer cell could accumulate fluorescent compounds such as protoporphyrin IX.
