Research Abstract |
ORAL LESIONS STRONGLY ASSOCIATED WITH HIV INFECTION ARE ORAL CANDIDIASIS, ORAL HAIRY LEUKOPLAKIA, INTRAORAL KAPOSI'S SARCOMA, NON-HODGKIN LYMPHOMA AND HIV-ASSOCIATED PERIODONTAL DISEASE. WE INVESTIGATED ULTRASTRUCTURAL FINDINGS OF THE GINGIVA DIAGNOSED PERIODONTITIS AND ACUTE NECROTIZING ULCERATIVE GINGIVITIS IN HIV-INFECTED PATIENTS. IN THE TISSUE SUFFERED FROM PERIODONTITIS, EPITHELIAL CELLS WERE EDEMATOUS. NEITHER VIRAL PARTICLES NOR VIRAL BUDDINGS WERE INDENTIFIED. HOWEVER THERE WERE TWO CHARACTERISTIC FINDINGS. AT FIRST, TUBULO-RETICULAR STRUCTURES WERE FREQUENTLY FOUND IN THE ENDOTHELIAL CELLS OF THE CAPILLARIES IN THE SUBEPITHELIAL LAYER. NEXT MULTIPLE EXTRAVASATED ERYTHROCYTES WERE ALSO OBSERVED. IN THE TISSUE SUFFRED FROM ACUTE NECROTIZING ULCERATIVE GINGIVITIS, MANY SPIROCHETAS WERE OBSERVED. THESE FINDINGS CONCERNING TWO TYPE OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE SUGGESTED THE MORPHOLOGICAL EXPRESSION IN THE GINGIVA ASSOCIATED WITH HIV-INFECTED PATIENTS.
