Research Abstract

It is important to control the respiratory and circulatory systems in good condition at meals in severely disabled patients. In the present study, the respiratory waveforms of abdomen, ribcage and their sum with the Respigraph^R (NIMS) and the end tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO_2), arterial oxygen saturation (SpO_2), pulse rate and respiratory rate with the 4700 Oxicap^R (Ohmeda) were measured from both healthy and severely disabled patients in the supine or lateral position and the position during the meal.
Severely disabled patients showed abdomen-dominant or ribcage-dominant respiratory waveforms individually.
There was no significance in respiratory and circulatory conditions (SPO_2, pulse rate, ETCO_2 and respiratory rate) between the supine or lateral position and the position during meal, therefore the position during meal was appropriate.
A case showed high frequency of central apnea, oral respiration and no effective ventilation.
The change in the respiratory waveforms and ETCO_2 values was followed by the changes of SpO_2 values.
