Research Abstract |
The aim of this study was to support young dentists in a postgraduate clinical training course with a vurtual patient in dentistry. The first stage of our study was designed to develop a World Wide Web (WWW) based interactive educational software which mimics a first coming patient in a dental clinic. And the second stage was developping a generator for a virtual oral cavity. Our system does not handle voice input and synthesized voice reply but works on a WWW browser with typical sentences that were used by an ordinary first coming patient in a dental clinic. Our sytem resonses the question that maches keywords in the system. And a question that was not inplemented to our system will be automatically write to the files on the hard disc and accumulated questions were selcted and added to the system eventually. This means that our system will brushed up with users. After the opening of this system to the users in our faculty, a postgraduate student replied us that the family members of the ove

rsea students in our university could not understand Japanese and they sometime have troubles in a dental clinic. Then, we modified our system to handle multilingual medical interviews such as Japanese, Chinese, Korea, English and French. This was our second product. This system was not only for the oversea people but also for our hospital staff who could not explain disease status of the patient with patient's native language. The third product of our study was virtual patient, itself. We have had an analysys for the Updates of Japanese Dental Health in 1997 to make our virtual patient more likely to the real patient's status in Japan. We have designed three types of algorizm to generate the virtual patient. The first one was making every status of every teeth individually with randam values.Sometimes, this system generated an unblanced type of oral cavity in virtul patient. Then, we tried another algorizm of two stage method. The first stage was evaluating the patient as a whole and assigned their oral health stage according to the values from the real world. The second stage was to assigned the status of tooth according to more small values from the randam function. The virtual oral cavity that were generated with this method had more reality than before.
