Research Abstract

The Purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between state anxiety and/or moods and athletic performance on track & field athletes. The subjects of this study were jumpers and throwers in track & field athletes of university. They were assessed by the Japanese version of the Spielberger's STAI, which was administered about 2 weeks (normal condition), 2 hours and just prior to start of each meets and just after meets. And they were assessed by POMS.
The results were as follows;
(1) State anxiety athletes tend to be higher at intercollegiate athletic meets than taial.
(2) State anxiety level of throwers tend to be higher than jumpers.
(3) Performance of jumpers having higher state anxiety at pre-athletic meets tend to be lower than jumpers having moderate or lower state anxiety. This result was not true on throwers.
(4) State anxiety of female athletes tend to be higher than male athletes..
(5) Athletes of bad mood state tend to be lower performance.
