Research Abstract

We have isolated a new a-tocomonoenol from the lipophilic fraction of salmon eggs which has an unusual methylene unsatutation at the terminal phytyl chain of ubiquitous alpha-tocopherol (alpha-Toc). This marine-derived tocopherol (MDT) was found at high ratio with alpha-Toc in phytoplankton and zooplankton samples captured in the cold-water environment of the North Pacific Ocean (Hokkaido Sea) and our finding that aquaculutured salmon fed with a MDT-free diet had little MDT suggest that MDT is trophically acquired from natural phytoplankton production in the cold-water food-chain. We found little difference in the antioxidant activity between MDT and alpha-Toc in vitro, but observed higher activity for MDT in fish oil at 0゚C.Similarly, we found that MDT performed better than alpha-Toc in viscous, cholesterol-incorporated liposomal membranes than in cholestrol-free liposome. Our results suggest that MDT may provide an important physiological advantage in antioxidant functions of cold-water marine organisms.
