Research Abstract |
Generally, sound level meters aren't popular. Therefore, the equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level isn't truly understood not only physically but also sensuously by many people exposed to noise. Hence, we designed and made a new sound level meter (SLM) equipped with both "urusasa" (annoyance) and "five-hues" scales representing the psychological effects to noise. First, using this SLM, a mean acceptable outdoor noise level of L_<Aeq, T> for dwellings supposed by residents living at seven typical districts in Japan is experimentally discussed. From the results, the mean value of L_<Aeq, T>, corresponding to tolerable degree on the "urusasa and hues" scales supposed by residents for dwelling may be 49dB. Secondly, two kinds of simulators of vehicle noise sources are proposed toward the construction of experience and education system of community noise by the SLM above. One is a combination of liquid crystal projector with 60 inches screen (ELMO EDP-2000) and two channel loudspeakers system based on the relation between their level difference and the position of sound image (a vehicle simulated with two point sound sources). The other is a combination of display mounted on head (SONY PLM-100) and two channel earphones system with an electroacoustic transducer of earplug type proposed by us which transmits the same sound as the transfer characteristics of the above loudspeakers system to one's tympanic membranes. From the experimental results, it can be said that both the simulators are effective for the virtual reality and the selection of building materials.
