Research Abstract

Our research plans were developed for this year, 1999, based on our research findings obtained in the previous year. Two oversee investigation teams were made ; one for North America, the other for Oceania, and each team investigated the sports-related events and organizations in the assigned countries. In the North America study, the research team visited the office of Special Olympics where an international governing body for sports promotion for the disabled is located, and various interview data and some related materials were obtained through direct meeting with staff working for the office. In total, one hundred fifty countries were enrolled and one million people were involved in some sort of activities initiated by the organization. In addition, the investigation team visited the American National Senior Games held in Orlando, Florida. The site of the game was Disney Sport Center in Disney World, and this event was supported by a number of volunteers who registred in advance. I … More n Canada, the team visited the Health Canada and interviewed volunteer activities and management in fitness settings. The interview was also conducted at the ParticipACTION office that manages some campaigns and other communication activities for fitness promotion, and various information regarding volunteer activities for Trans Canada Trail 2000 was gathered.
The Oceania investigation team visited Hillary Commission, a governmental agency in New Zealand, and collected the information on some campaigns for sport-related volunteers and volunteer activities in community sports clubs. The investigation was also made in Australian Sports Commission, Australia and various data on the "Active Australia" campaign including VIP programs was obtained. In February 2000, a mini-symposium was held by this research project members. Dr.Barry McPherson in Canada was invited to this meeting and the investigation results in 1999 were reported and discussed. At this meeting, the definition, classification, and promotion strategies concerning sport volunteers in Japan were also discussed and integrated. Less
