Research Abstract

The situation of desertification is not known well. The objective of this study is to map desertification of the whole Asia using NOAA AVHRR data, existing maps, and expeditions. This study includes:
1.Establishment of classification system of desertification from the view points of cause and degree of desertification.
2.Production of land cover map and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) map from AVHRR data for the whole Asia as references for analysis of desertification.
3.Expedition of drylands of Central Asia including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan
4.Production of desertification map and its digitized map based on the above classification system using.
The outputs/products of this study are:
1.Classification system of desertification
2.Analysis of desertification in each region in Asia such as Central Asia, Middle East, China, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India
3.Desertification map of Asia with a scale of 1:10,000,000
4.Digitized desertification map of Asia
