Research Abstract |
The objective of this research is to establish a fundamental basis for the technique of active enhancement of the phase change heat transfer processes, such as boiling and condensation. As is widely recognized, heat transfer enhancement is one of the key technologies applicable to many different areas such as the small-temperature-difference heat transfer for effective energy utilization, colling of electronic equipments, and ultra-rapid cooling of substances in manufacturing of new materials. Although utilization of phase change heat transfer is preferable in attaining a high heat transfer rate, further improvement can be achieved if the effect of an external electric field (ehd effect) is properly employed. In this cooperative research project, six scientists, three from Japan and three from romania, have been engaged in the research for two years at their own universities. At the same time they visited each other the partners' laboratories to observe what were going on there. The Japanese team investigated mainly the effect of electric field on film condensation of steam on a horizontal low-finned tube, while the romanian group studies the effect of electric forces on the behavior of vapor bubbles in nucleate boiling. The details of the results are published in the reseach report (from 12).
