Research Abstract

Our group focused the research subjects on (1) protium diffusion mechanisms, (2) calculation of configurational correlation functions, (3) analysis of electronic states and occupation sites of protium in the compounds, and (4) formation and fracture mechanisms of protium compounds. Following results have been obtained. (1) Hydriding and dehydriding processes of LaNi_<5-x>Co_x-H and LaNi_<5-y>Al_y-H have been studied by high pressure DSC. Substitution of Co and Al increases the activation energy for dehydriding reactions and stabilizes the hydride phases. (2) Calculated phase separation of Pd-H system is in good agreement with that obtained by experiments. (3) A PCT apparatus for low-middle pressure range was made originally. Using this apparatus, hydrogen absorbing behavior in vanadium alloys in lower pressure range of hydrogen was investigated systematically. Influence of alloying elements on the stability of ヲツ-phase (V2H, VH) has been elucidated. (4) Formation of protium compound starts from the rim heterogeneously. In the latter stage with high density of rim, the compound is extended with movement of the interface boundary between matrix and compound. In all the processes, dislocations are formed with very high density. Cracks are formed significantly at the period of rim formation. This is the reason why the absorption pressure is very high at the first cycle.
