Research Abstract |
This scientific research on priority areas of structural biology of biological machineries started 1) to set a forum of crystallographers with biochemists and molecular biologists, 2) to develop the crystallographic tools to utilize highly the synchrotron radiation facilities in our country that are the best ones in the world, 3) .to make a framework for structural biology of biological machineries, the word indicating the complexes or groups of several biological macromolecules that work for individual biological functions, in our country from both hardware and software. We have held five times of workshops and four times of symposia, and also have published newsletters from No.1 through 9, to facilitate the collaborations and exchange. As a result, many collaborations of crystallographers with biochemists and molecular biologists have been produced and hence many structures of proteins and other biological macromolecules (more than 200) have been determined and many papers (more than 900) have been published in this scientific research area on priority areas. We have also held many symposia and workshops in the annual meetings of Protein Society of Japan, Biophysical Society of Japan, Japan Biochemical Society, Japan Society for Molecular Biology, and so on Thus, we have succeeded in developing the structural biology of biological machineries, but structural biology of proteins and protein complexes become more and more important.
