Research Abstract |
The CDF detector, which is installed at the Tevatron accelerator of Fermilab, USA, is currently being upgraded for the next data taking RUN-2. The main purposes of this Grant-in-Aid research are to do quality control involved in the production of two silicon microstrip detectors, SVX-II and ISL, and to do physics analyses of already obtained RUN-1 data. SVX-II and ISL sensors are double-sided with p and n electrodes crossing at angles of 90゜ in SVX-II and 1.2゜ in ISL, thereby enabling us to measure particle trajectories in 2 dimensions. We have designed sensors which work at severe radiation environments at Tevatron. Sensor fabrication was completed at Hamamatsu Photonics. We constructed a testing system and carried out testing of electrical properties and radiation damage studies, which was the key to successful fabrication of high quality silicon sensors. Assembling the sensors into ladders is being carried out at Fermilab for ISL and at Hamamatsu Photonics for SVX-II. A scheme for precision ladder assembling is established, which will lead to a successful construction of these detectors as central elements for top and bottom quark detection at RUN-2. Many important physics results are obtained from the CDF experiment at the energy frontier. We have carried out analyses on top-quark mass measurements, single top-quark production, observation of Bc mesons, BィイD10ィエD1-BィイD4-ィエD4ィイD10ィエD1 mixing, transverse momentum distribution of W bosons, hard diffractive processes, and searches for Techni-particles and SUSY particles. These analyses are carried out for Doctoral theses and the results are published in scientific journals.
