Research Abstract

1.Measurement of temperature and relative humidity (RH) to which art works were exposed during loans
Temperature and RH were measured during outgoing loans of art works. It became evident that temperature and RH at the borrowing institutions were not always controlled in the proper range as we requested.
2.Measurement of changes of paper exposed to fluctuations of temperature and RH
Changes in shape and moisture contents (MC) of paper were measured when exposed to fluctuation of temperature and RH. As general trends, distortion and MC of paper increased promptly when RH increased and the bigger the fluctuation of RH, the bigger the distortion and the increase of MC. Some types of paper showed high regularity in these trends and others showed a considerable variation depending on the position measured.
3.Comparison of materials and structure of microclimate box.
Varieties of test models with different materials and structure were made and their effectiveness was evaluated. In general, they could not buffer the transmission of the outside fluctuation in temperature as it was expected, even using low thermal conductive materials, but they could stabilize sufficiently the inside RH when the outside fluctuation was fast. The difference of its effectiveness with the different materials was negligible when the box was sealed airtight. It was found, however, that the inside RH tended to come equilibrium with the outside in long term, meaning that the outside RH must be stabilized in long term even using microclimate box.
4.Development of the basic structure of microclimate box and their evaluation
According to the results of above experiments, the basic structure of the microclimate box was developed, and from the evaluations of its prototype it was confirmed that its specifications must be finalized piece-to-piece depending of dimension and condition of each object.
