Research Abstract

This project had as its objective, the aim for a broad understanding of early modern Osaka from two perspectives. First, with urban social historial analysis as its axis, it aimed to reach out to research findings on Osaka from the fields of economic, cultural (literary), legal, and architectural history, as well as archaeology. Second, it aimed to integrally position Osaka's early modernity within the city's diachronical progression from Naniwa-no-miya to contemporary Osaka.
Following the above objectives, we have surveyed and collected historical documents related to municipal decrees, domainal granary estates (Hiroshima and Choshu domains), reclaimed developments (Kobayashi-keDocuments ), and protected merchant's associations [kabu-nakama]. Furthermore, we catalogued merchant house document collections (Kagiya Mohei Documents, Nadaya Seibei Documents, Enoguya Documents, Kasai-ke Documents) housed at the Academic Information Center of Osaka City University.
While, on one hand, we organ … More ized the Early Modern Osaka Research Group [Kinsei Osaka Kenkyu-kai] to pursue this project with the research team at its center, we consolidated the results of our urban historical research on Osaka as a collection of essays, largely based upon our symposium "Urban Space and Social Structure of Early Modern Osaka [Kinsei Osaka no toshi kukan to shakai kozo], " held in March of last year. On that occasion, we probed the structure of Osaka's urban society from three directions-urban space (from archaeology, the transformation of residential space in the 18th Century ; from architectural history, a reconstruction of residentialstructures over a wide area ; the social=spatial structure of a domainal granary estate), the performing arts (the organization of entertainers in story-telling [sekkyo] and puppet theater [joruri]), and merchant's associations (the pharmaceutical brokers' association and networks of distribution ; 'Matsumae-don' ya, ' the trading company specializing in Hakodate produce ; the association of sake brewers ; the association of rentor-gurantors [ie-ukenin] and in relation to urban life). As a result, we believe that much has been accomplished toward fulfilling our first objective. As for the second, we are in the process of producing results, seeing as it has been the emphasis for our research group for the year 2000. For this, also, we hope to publish a collection of essays within the next few years. Less
