Research Abstract |
1. Molecular design of Artificial Glycoconjugate Polymers Several convenient synthetic routes of biologically important, complex oligosaccharides have been developed and then these oligosaccharides have been converted to the corresponding glycopolymers. (1) Gb3-trisaccharide (Galα1-4-Galβ1-4-Glcb) was synthesized from lactose and converted to acrylamide-type monomeric substance, followed by polymerization. (2) Mannose trisaccharide was synthesized by a convenient route and introduced to glycopolymer. 2. Characterization of the glycopolymers. (1) Cluster effect in glyco recognition was investigated by the interactions with lectins. (2) Carbohydrate-carbohydrate interaction was investigated by p-A isotherms abd surface plasmon resonance techniques. 3. Applications to Materials Biotechnology (1) Trapping of influenza viruses by sialyl-lactose-carrying glycopolymer (2) Neutralization of E-coli O-157 toxins by Gb3-trisaccharide-carrying glycopolymer (3) Production of antibodies by sulfated-galactose-carrying glycopolymers
