Research Abstract

1. Registration of multi-modal 3D data
We developed a system which realized total measurement of oral and maxillo-facial region. In the system, 3D-CT data of cranium, surface data of dental casts obtained by range finder (SURFRACER) were registered on a three dimensional coordinate system constructed from frontal and lateral cephalograms. In addition, surface data of facial soft tissue from crystal range finder could be added to the coordinate system. Moreover, we showed that 3D (surface) data of dental cast could be superimposed directly on the 3D-CT data of cranium.
2. Definition of landmark points of hard and soft tissue based on feature prediction
As landmarks of facial soft tissue and facial bone are close to midline, it was hard to find landmark points on the lateral part of the face. Then, we decide central point on the coronal section of CT, gave additional radial lines from it, and defined paired landmarks of soft and hard tissue. We measured 3D-CT data obtained from 9 patients with mandibular protrusion (without asymmetry) before and after operation. According to the movement of dental arch, we calculated moving matrix of hard tissue.
3. Analysis of soft tissue movement
We analyzed the movement of corresponded soft tissue by multidimensional analysis. Then, we showed that the soft tissue movement was expressed as a numerical formula.
