Research Abstract |
Throwing motion was recorded using 3-D videography for both male and female primary school children and university students. On average throwing ability of female was only about 50-60 % of that of male. Gender difference in throwing ability and throwing motion was far larger compared to other locomotive movements such as running and jumping. Major differences in joint angle changes between male and female subjects were found in the shoulder motion. Male and female differed remarkably in the horizontal adduction/horizontal abduction angle of the shoulder. In the time period analyzed, the shoulder is more abducted horizontally for male compared to female throwers. In contrast to the case of male, the mean value of the horizontal adduction angle for female subjects stayed positive indicating that the elbow was always in front of the shoulder alignment. It might be said the skillful throwing motion of male subjects fully utilize the anatomical features of the arms and shoulders of human being. New training and practice methods for developing better overhand throwing skills for boys and girls was discussed based on the developmental trend and training effects of overhand throwing motion. Throwing ability of both boys and girls in Japan has dropped gradually over the last few decades. It is very difficult for adults to develop the throwing ability or to cultivate the throwing motion. The results suggest that it is effective to start throwing practice during the primary school age in order to obtain a sufficient throwing skill to enjoy various sport activities.
