Research Abstract	本研究の第一年度である平成10年度は、北太平洋高緯度海域およびベーリング海における沈降粒子フラックス試料の継続採集を行った。これは1998年8月の北海道大学大学水産学部練習船おしょろ丸のアラスカ・ダッチハーバー-函館間の航海を利用したフィールドワークである。ベーリング海におけるステーションABと北太平洋中部亜寒帯ステーションSAにおけるセディメント・トラップの回収と再設置は順調に行われ、1997年8月より1998年8月の1年間の試料は2ステーションともに100%成功裡に得られた。今年度の実験室内での時系列沈降粒子フラックス試料解析は、主に珪藻に焦点を絞り詳細のデータを得た。本研究海域におけるプランクトン群集のうち有占群集である珪藻に関しては、1990-1998年の8年間の時系列フラツクスの詳細が明らかになった。ステーションMでは48種、またステーションSAでは40種が出現した。このうち有占種であるNeodecnticula seminaeが全珪藻沈降群集のうち約80%を占めていた。また画像解析システムを駆使したサイズ測定により、以前は全く不明であった珪藻有占種N.seminaeの有性生殖と無性生殖の季節変動の実体が明らかになった。早速この結果は1998年秋季海洋学会(京都)での報告のみならず、AGUアメリカ地球物理学会(サンフランシスコ)にも出席して成果の発表を行うことが出来た。本年度に主要設備備品とし購入した項目は:(1)画像解析システム;および(2)電子天秤の2点であり、早速実験室に設置した。これらは頻繁に使用中であり、毎巨の研究作業に欠かせない備品となっている。
