Research Abstract |
Flashover phenomenon is known as one of dangerous fire phenomena that brings serious damage. Though many researches have been carried out to understand flashover phenomenon, only a part of flashover starting mechanism is understood to a certain extent. This study has carried out to understand relationship between flashover and backdraft phenomena in the early stage of fire. Fundamental wood properties such as surface color change, volatile matters release temperature and component, carbonization rate, internal temperature history, possibility of internal ignition and so on were investigated experimentally by using a microscope with high temperature stage and an electric furnace. Correlation between flashover and the above mentioned wood properties will be studied numerically in future to make an advanced fire fighting method. In 2000, a backdraft simulation model using zone model was developed. This simulation model will be easily used to estimate flashover. This simulation model is fundamentally one zone model. A thermal decomposition model of wood and an Arrhenius exothermic rate model were newly developed and introduced into the simulation model. This simulation model explains backdraft and its related phenomena well. In near future, flashover phenomena will be clarified a little bit more.
