Research Abstract |
A very new type of sterile water sampler for microbiological research has been developed. Specificaton for this sampler is as follows ; depth of the use is up to 6,000 m, capable of sampling from 15 different layers, and maximum volume of 1,000 ml. It is composed of onboard facility with ultrasonic generator and transducer, and under water facility with cramp unit, cutter unit, drive unit, pump unit, control unit, generator unit and a all-tight water tank. Ultrasonic wave sent from onboard facility will activate the water sampler and cut the tubing at the water entrance, and then pump unit will suck out water inside the all-tight water tank which will induce ambient water sarnple to introduce into sample bag inside the tank through silicone tubing by negative pressure. Control unit will operate the time for the sampler. This step will be continued at 15 different layers, All the system inside has been sterilized beforehand of course. We have successfully sampled water from surface to 6,000 m during KH-00-1 cruise by R/V Hakuho-maru and KT-00-9 cruise by R/V Tansei-maru.
