Research Abstract |
Various texts generally called The Biography of the Prince Shotoku have something in common, but they differ in their ways of approach, amounts of information provided, and texts themselves. In our research project, based on the insight that the texts in question can be categorized into seven types we have selected twenty-four texts which are representative of each type, and have continued to read them critically. On receiving the grant we have made extensive field studies and photo copies of the nine manuscripts which are established to be the bases of the texts. This has enabled us not only to step forward to compiling a reliable variorum texts or Biography, but to trace the relationships among the texts and see them in their proper cultural-historical perspective. On authors transmitters, and propagators of Biography some new lights are now being shed. It is ultimately expected that we should compile facsimile editions or the Biography of each type with rigorous editorial and explanatory notes. Although some of the Biography have been facsimiled or printed, most are difficult of access because they are possessed by the places not open to the public and can hardly be said to have been used sufficiently. When material of and around the Biography are more or less exhaustively collected and the texts through rigorous text criticism are published, they will undoubtedly contribute to the studies in history, literature, religion, etc. as well as in the research fields of bibliogaphy and philology. Our project in this sense might be claimed to be a significant test example or Japanese culture study based on the disciplines or bibliography and philology. The materials collected during the course of our project are all housed in the Shido-Bunko Library, and those which are under permission are ready to be available to the center for the Prince Sholoku studies.
