Research Abstract |
The results and significance of the research from the past two years can be summarized as follows. The first paper revealed that Malay and Chinese work-related values are similar in some aspects but different in some aspects. The similar values shared are in high power distance and collectivism. However, Malays are believed to have high uncertainty avoidance, high femininity, and short-term orientation while Chinese are believed to have low uncertainty avoidance, high masculinity, and long-term orientation. The second paper revealed that Malays have not been successful in creating a dynamic Bumiputera Commercial and Industrial Class despite decades of high profile assistance programs. The governmental assistance effectively eradicated the structural impediments that had supposedly prevented the Malays from prospering. This research speculated that Malay values are at least partially responsible for their failure although politics may also be s strong factor. Theoretically, this research confirms that values are related to managerial practices and economic standing of groups. Masculinity is suspected to hold some explanatory power in the Malay-Chinese difference in economic and managerial performance. This shall be the focus of future research.
