Research Abstract

Superconductive Magnetic Energy Storage(SMES) which is characterized by fast response time and high efficiency is able to be applied to load leveling against load fluctuation in electric power line system. The capacity of SMES must be as small as possible from the economical point, and the coil current must be controlled near the middle point of the rated storage energy to keep the possibility of sudden release or storage of the energy from or in a coil against strongly fluctuating electrical loads.
In this study, the control method to use effectively the capacity of SMES is proposed for levelling load power fluctuation, and it is shown how this method is effective by the computer simulation and the experimental results. The proposed control method is as follows:
It has the no control zone where the load levelling control does not operate for small fluctuation such as not to give the big influence against the power line.
No control zone is set at the both side of the average value of load fluctuation.
The current reference of SMES coil is varied with load fluctuation.
SMES coil current moves to the current reference or holds on it at the small load fluctuation within the no control zone.
The load levelling control operates for large load fluctuation by varying the control value according to SMES current and load fluctuation averting lack or saturation of SMES energy.
