Research Abstract

"Digital Paper" was recently proposed as a new medium that offers the advantages of both softcopy and hardcopy. This study aims at (1) to clarify the ideal human-interface for Digital Paper, and (2) to realize new display devices for Digital Paper.
(1) Study for clarifying ideal human-interface for the Digital Paper
This study aims at comparison of operation efficiency between hardcopy work and softcopy work. Our goal is to clarify the reason why hardcopy work is generally comfortable for human, and to know human-interface requirements for the Digital Paper. Objective tests and subjective tests were carried out, and the difference between hardcopy and softcopy media were clarified.
(2)Study for realizing display devices for the Digital Paper.
2.1 Twisting ball display method
We carry out basic experiments into ball behavior by using enlarged scale model balls. Threshold electric fields for bistable motion and response time when switching ball direction are measured under various conditions. A theoretical study on the moments of ball rotation is introduced. An equation that yields ball rotation is described that is based on the coulomb force.
2.2 G/H type PDLC
A guest-host type liquid crystal sheet medium was prepared. An ion projection head was used for surface charge formation. It was confirmed that white images could be repeatedly formed on a black background by ion projection followed by image erasure to the black background by heating. It is demonstrated that this sheet medium has ideal characteristics ; it reproduces the viewing angle and flexibility of paper.
2.3 Electrophoretic display method
We prepared a microcapsule electrophoretic display as the medium and an ion projection head as the driver ; clear white images on a blue background were achieved. As digital paper, this medium offers the significant benefits of non-contact writing by ion projection, ease of manufacturing, and physical flexibility.
